WAUKESHA - Elizabeth M. "Betty" Herbst of Waukesha died on Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at Woodland Health Care Center in Brookfield at the age of 75. Betty was born in Milwaukee on Sept. 22, 1924, the daughter of Stephen and Laura (nee Berner) Binder. Betty was a longtime Waukesha resident and a former operator with her late husband Robert L. Herbst of Mister Steph’s Restaurant in Waterford from 1971 until 1982. Robert Sr. passed away in 1981, and Betty sold the restaurant in Waterford the next year and moved to Milwaukee, where she took a position as a housemother with the Patricia Stevens School. Betty later returned to Waukesha, where she was one of the original residents of La Casa Village Apartments.

Betty is survived by her sons, S. Robert "Steph" (Debra) Herbst of Okauchee and Robert Jr. (Joan) Herbst of Colgate. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Robert Wayne (Bobbie) Herbst of Sussex, Heather (Abel) Lazcano of Waukesha, Gregory Barrett of Pewaukee, Tyrone Sanders of Germantown, Kristin Barrett of Pewaukee, Rob Chudzike of Okauchee, April Chudzike of Okauchee, Maxwell Chudzike of Okauchee, Blake Lowell Herbst and Brook Elizabeth Herbst, both of of Okauchee, and Jim and Jeff Herbst. Betty is further survived by her great-grandchildren, Dominic, Jordan, Vincent, Antonio, Marilyn and Nicholas. She is also survived by other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Herbst, in 1981 and by her daughter, Carol Herbst. in 1960.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at the Rudolph-Larsen Bros. Funeral Home, East Avenue at Carroll Street in Waukesha. Burial will follow at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Milwaukee. Friends may call from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12, at the funeral home.
