Dr. Steven Wenger

Dr. Steven Wenger, 58, of Jacksonville, Ill., died Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 16, 2003, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born June 11, 1945, in Horton, Kan., the son of Kenneth and Thelma Sernes Wenger. He married Barbara Youmans on Dec. 23, 1972, in Ireland; she survives him.

He is also survived by one son, Noah Wenger of Jacksonville; two sisters, Barbara Norris of Shawnee, Kan., and Margaret (Gary) Hartter of Lindsborg, Kan.; two brothers, Paul (Lisa) Wenger of Erie, Kan., and David (Trudi) Wenger of Lenexa, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dr. Wenger was professor and chairman of the psychology department at MacMurray College in Jacksonville. He completed his undergraduate studies at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., and received his master's and Ph.D. degrees from Kansas State University.

Dr. Wenger loved teaching, genealogy research, deer hunting and fishing. He was an avid collector of electronics, a musician and a ham radio operator. Dr. Wenger served on the board of the Youth Attention Center in Jacksonville and was advisor to Psi Chi at MacMurray College. He served in the United States Air Force, stationed at Rantoul Air Force Base in Champaign during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Church of Our Saviour.

A memorial Mass will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 19, at the Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, with burial at Calvary Cemetery. The family will meet friends from noon until 1:30 p.m. today at the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
