Attorney William J. Marth Attorney William J. Marth, 82, of West Bend, passed away peacefully of natural causes Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at the Samaritan Health Center, West Bend. Bill was born Dec. 21, 1921, to the late Dr. A. Carl and Florence Day Marth, in Fond du Lac, living in Campbellsport and later in West Bend. William was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in 1935. He graduated from West Bend High School (Class of ‘39). He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in undergraduate prelaw studies. On June 1, 1942, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps., and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was member of the 5th Unit of the "Flying Badgers" of Wisconsin. His basic training and flight training took place in Glenview, Ill., Iowa City, Iowa, Atlanta, Pensacola, Fla., with advanced flight training at Corpus Christi, Texas, as Squadron 18B, Class 12-C-42 (c) aircraft squadron of the U.S. Marine Corps. His flight training included flying Stear-man trainers, SNJ’s, PBY’s, C-31 Transports, Corsair Fighters, B-25s and B-26s. This also included qualification for aircraft carrier landings and takeoffs. While actively based at Cherry Point, N.C., he received his commission as a 1st Lieutenant. He was honorably discharged from active duty on November 14, 1949, to the 9th Reserve District. Then, Bill returned to his prelaw studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While a student, at the UW, he was an active member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. During his summers he continued his love of flying by crop-dusting agricultural crops throughout Wisconsin, surrounding states, and the south, in a Stearman Bi-plane for Aerial Blight Control Inc. out of West Bend. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, he went on to attend the University of Wisconsin Law School, Madison, graduating with a Juris Doctor on January 29, 1949, and was admitted to the Wisconsin State Bar Association on February 4, 1949, to practice law. Returning to West Bend, he joined Attorney John Cannon in his law practice, later, becoming a partner of Cannon & Marth, Attorneys-at-Law. When Attorney Cannon retired, Bill’s brother, Attorney Robert D. Marth, joined him, as his partner, in their new law firm of Marth & Marth, Attorneys-at-Law with local offices in West Bend, Kewaskum, Theresa, and Allenton. During his legal profession, Bill was an active member of the Washington County Bar Associa-tion, Wisconsin State Bar Assoc-iation and American Bar Associa-tion. He was widely known and admired as a tenacious and effective jury trial lawyer. Bill retired from active legal practice in 1984 but he continued to provide legal services for himself, his family, and close friends. His brother and partner, Bob, predeceased him in 1997. On June 11, 1949, in Madison, Wis., Bill married June J. Jones, daughter of Willis J. Jones (W.J. Jones Trucking, Milwaukee) and Elizabeth O’Reilly Jones. In the early 1950s, Bill and his brother, Robert, took an active interest in building new homes in West Bend as Marth & Marth Real Estate. Later, Bill’s wife, June, continued the real estate business as June J. Marth Real Estate in which Bill was active as legal counsel and adviser. During this time, Bill’s love for flying from his service days resurfaced and he provided guided aerial tours of Washington County for clients, buyers, sellers, and friends. He enjoyed all of his flying buddies from the West Bend Municipal Airport. Providing special flight services to local JAMM for Kids events was a special treat for Bill. Bill enjoyed playing golf with friends and family for over 33 years at the West Bend Country Club. When not golfing, he enjoyed skiing. He truly enjoyed skiing with his relatives in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Later, he enjoyed the warmer climates preferring walking the beaches at Bradenton and Dog Island, Florida to the winters of Wisconsin. Survivors include his beloved wife, June J. Marth; daughter, Sharon E. Marth, West Bend; son, John C. (Kathy), West Bend; two granddaughters, Katherine T. Marth and Kristen E. Marth, West Bend; first cousin, Jean Riesen (Norman), other relatives, and friends. Predeceasing him in death were his parents, Dr. A. Carl Marth and Florence Day Marth and his brother, Attorney Robert D. Marth. The family wishes to express their grateful appreciation to all of the staff and auxiliary services at Samaritan Health Care Center, his physicians, Dr. Todd J. Hammer, Dr. William Owens, and his life-long friend, Dr. William Nielsen, as well as St. Joseph’s Community Hospital, and the Phillip Funeral Home in West Bend. A Memorial Service in honor of William. J. "Bill" Marth will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel, 1420 W. Paradise Drive, West Bend, at 6 p.m., with Rev. Elaine Weidemann officiating and shar-ed remembrances welcomed. Additional fellowship and visitation with Bill’s family and friends will follow the service with food and refreshments. Cremation will take place at Paradise Cremation Services of West Bend. Interment of ashes will take place at Washington County Memorial Park of West Bend on Wednesday, Dec. 22, at 3 p.m. with Military Honors present. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to either the American Cancer Society, N19 W24350 Riverwood Drive, Wauk-esha, WI 53188, or to the Ice Age Park and Trail Foundation, 207 E. Buffalo St., Suite 515, Milwaukee, WI 53202. The Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend is assisting the family.
