Jean B. Hepburn

A memorial service was held on June 14 at Lasata Heights Retirement Center for Jean B. Hepburn, who died June 12, 2003, at age 90 after a brief illness. The service was followed by interment in the family plot at Zur Ruhe Cemetery . Mueller Funeral Home, Cedarburg assisted the family with arrangements.

Mrs. Hepburn was born in 1914 in Topeka, Kan., to Thomas J. Berryman and Hazel Lundington Berryman, and moved to Chicago as a child. For more than 61 years she was the devoted wife of Gordon J. Hepburn. They settled in Cedarburg in 1990.

She was physically active all of her life, being one of the first women to receive a letter for sports at Lindbloom High School in Chicago. As late as 1990 she swam 50 pool laps a day; and until two weeks before her death she walked laps several times a day around her retirement complex, typically greeting everyone she met along the way. Even though she loved Wisconsin, she remained to the end of her life an enthusiastic Cubs fan.

Community involvement was an ongoing part of her life. In her years in Cedarburg alone she was a volunteer for Columbia St. Mary’s Ozaukee, Ozaukee Congregational Church and Riveredge Nature Center. She helped disabled patients to church services at a care center near her home and despite the rigors of Wisconsin winters, she rang the bell for the Salvation Army each Christmas. She was a member of the Cedarburg Woman’s Club.

Survivors include: sons Mal Hepburn of Cedarburg, Will Hepburn of Prescott, Ariz.; daughters-in-law Jill Hepburn, Patti Hepburn and Cathleen Hepburn; grandchildren Scott Hepburn, Kelly Hepburn, Tori Hepburn, Matt Hepburn and Jamie Hepburn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, and a brother Lyle Berryman.
