Verone M. Roberts Verone M. Roberts, of Mequon and Lake Tomahawk, died on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at the age of 93. She was born on Dec. 8, 1908 in Kendall, to Charles and Kathyrn (Sunday) Marquette. She attended Milton College and the University of Wisconsin in the late 1920s studying politics, philosophy and other liberal arts. While at Milton she met Willard L. Roberts, chemistry major, who courted her by driving his Buick touring car back and forth in front of her rooming house. The strategy was successful and they were married in 1928 at St. Cloud, Minn.; Verone arriving by train after beginning her journey in a horse drawn buggy in the rain. They settled in Madison, starting a family, while Willard completed a doctorate in biochemistry. Then followed moves to Battle Creek, Mich., and Summit, N.J., as Willard began a career with General Foods Corporation. Returning to Wisconsin in 1947 as Willard commenced his 23-year management of Federal Foods, Inc., Thiensville, Verone became active in the Cedarburg Methodist Church, P.E.O. and the League of Women Voters through the 1950s. In the 1960s she had a career in designer dress sales at the Marshall Field 28 Shop in Milwaukee. Also, during this period, she began managing the family resort, Roberts Cottages, at Lake Tomahawk, serving three generations of customers. She was active in the Lakeland Historical Society and Wisconsin Regional Writers. Mrs. Roberts is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Breitweiser; sons James (Helen) and Thomas (Sylvia) and by Dr. Elizabeth M. Roberts, mother of her grandson Dr. Charles W.M. Roberts; other grandchildren are Lynne Breitweiser Vickerstaff, Dr. Karen Breitweiser Whitehair, Karl Paul Breitweiser, Jennifer Roberts, Kari Roberts and Greg Roberts; great-grandchildren Scott, Billy, Matthew, Christopher, Andrew and Maria; brothers Clare and Charles (Elaine). Further survived by other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by her husband Willard and brothers Harold, Marcel and Roy Marquette. Memorial service Sat. Dec. 7, 3 p.m. at Community United Methodist Church, Cedarburg. Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of service. Luncheon and fellowship to follow service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Kendall Library appreciated. Mueller Funeral Home of Cedarburg is assisting the family with arrangements.
