Joseph A. "Joe" Schwai

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church for Joseph A. "Joe" Schwai, 74. of Cedar Creek in the Town of Polk, who died on Dec. 19, 2000. Father Robert J. Bales officiated at the ceremony. Interment was at Cedar Creek Cemetery of the Town of Polk on Saturday. The Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. Schwai was born in Milwaukee on June 10, 1926 to Joseph and Marie (nee Pawelka) Schwai. On Oct. 27, 1951 he married LuAnn (nee Zuern) at St. Kilian’s Catholic Church.

For ten years, Joe worked for his parents and in 1957 Joe and LuAnn purchased Schwai’s Country Tavern, Store, and Hall of Cedar Creek, Town of Polk. Joe and LuAnn managed the tavern for forty-two years. He had his tree farm for over 36 years.

Survivors include: wife LuAnn; children: Michael (Cathy) Schwai of West Bend, Patricia (Gene) Puestow of Jackson, Susan (Steven) Giebel of Manitowoc, Thomas (Kathey) Schwai of Cedar Creek; 14 Grandchildren; sisters-in-law Rose Schwai of West Bend, Peggy (Robert) Stinson of Seattle, Wash., Donna Gehring of Hartford; brothers-in-law Rev. Ted Zuern S.J. of Washington, D. C., Thomas (Elaine) Zuern of Hartford.

Further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert Schwai, and brother-in-law James Gehring.
