Gerlach
William C. Gerlach, 70, of the town of Jackson, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at St. Joseph's Community Hospital, West Bend. He was born Aug. 18, 1930, in Milwaukee, to the late William J. and Alma V. (nee Kraus) Gerlach. After graduating from North Division High School, he attended college for a year before enlisting in the United States Air Force. During the Korean Conflict, he served in Japan and also Iwo Jima. Following his discharge, he married Gloria Plank on June 12, 1954, in Milwaukee. For over 32 years, he was employed in the maintenance department at the former Continental Can Co. in Glendale, and in 1992 he retired after working for four years in building maintenance with Washington County. In 1962 he and his family moved to Cedarburg, and since 1970 have lived in the town of Jackson. While living away from the city, Bill grew to admire the different types of birds that would visit his home, especially songbirds. He was a member of the Steel Workers of America, an active member of the council at Christ Lutheran Church in Jackson, a charter member of the Jackson Memorial Post 7240 VFW, and the SSgt. Henry F. Gumm Post 486 American Legion. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Gloria; three children, William E. (Sandra) of Hurley, Susan E. Gerlach of Slinger and Tina M. (Michael) Piekarski of Eden; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Mae (Harold) Weiss of Chino, Calif.; two brothers-in-law, Everett H. (Eileen) Plank of Mequon and Terrance V. (Valerie) Plank of DelCanto, Calif.; his best buddy Perpsey; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death was a brother, Milton. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 28, at 6:30 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Jackson. Rev. Robert McCelland will officiate, and burial will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Christ Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation at the church only will be Thursday from 3:30 to 6:15 p.m. Memorials are appreciated. The Schmidt Funeral Home of Jackson is serving the family.
