Norbert A. Sauer

Funeral services were held Sunday for Norbert A. Sauer, the original owner and publisher of the Port Washington Pilot newspaper, who died Nov. 30, 2000 at Sheboygan Progressive Care Center at the age of 96.

Services were led by Pastor John Klieve at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Port Washington, with burial at Union Cemetery in Port Washington. Arrangements were handled by Eernisse Funeral Homes, Port Washington.

Mr. Sauer was born April 27, 1904 in Grafton, son of Fary and Christina (nee Urban) Sauer. He married Hulda Dommer at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Port Washington on June 15, 1927, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 18, 2000.

A lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Port Washington, where he served as church secretary form 1930-’60. He was very active at the church, twice serving on the building committee, teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir.

Mr. Sauer also served on the Ozaukee County Board for more than 20 years, and was a charter member of the Port Washington Kiwanis Club. As publisher of the Port Washington Pilot, he was a member of the Wisconsin Newspapers Association. The newspaper was purchased by the Schroeder family in the 1970s, and incorporated into the News Graphic in 1979-which was known for more than a decade as the News Graphic Pilot.

He is survived by son Donald (Alice) Sauer of Port Washington; daughter Arleen (the late Rod) Schroeder of Grafton; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law Arthur (Audrey) Dommer and Oscar (Evelyn) Dommer, both of Saukville; sisters-in-law Edna (the late Ervin) Sauer of Sun Prairie and Esther Holdorf of Tomahawk; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
